The Torea is the Maori name for the Variable Oystercatcher (Heamatopus Unicolor)
(The images above enlarge on scroll-over)

The Torea is a threatened species native to New Zealand. While it mainly inhabits the rocky and sandy coastlines, it can be found in the beautiful Marlborough vineyard that grows the grapes for this wine.

We take great care to nurture this precious bird.

Prominent Maori leader Sir Tipene O’Regan was delighted with these wines being named after the Torea, so much so that he has written some Maori words especially for us:

“Ka whati te tai, Ka pao te Torea” meaning: “As the tide recedes the oystercatcher strikes.”
